CJLO X SXSW 2024: Metal Music Preview

Ah yes... after a break for... some reason that I forgot that is DEFINITELY still NOT happening as you are reading this right now, CJLO is heading back down to SXSW for the first time since 2019.

Now, I've stated in the past that metal does not seem to be a priority for SX, so how is it this year?

It's actually worse than previous years.

image+nation 2023: Two Films Not to Miss

The image+nation festival is celebrating its 36th anniversary from November 16th to 26th, 2023. Canada’s original LGBT2SQ+ film festival that celebrates new queer storytelling is hosting both a theatrical edition in Montreal and a hybrid edition across Canada. There will also be in-person events and panel discussions along the curated 11 days of programming. Emphasizing diversity through its 175 films, image+nation has showings from over 27 countries, representing all corners of the globe. POP Montreal 2023: In Review

POP Montreal took over the city’s Plateau district from September 27th through October 1st, 2023. Oh, those halcyon days of two weeks ago, the nights were warmer, the world was maybe just a little bit less screwed up and the sound of music spilled out onto the sidewalks of our fair city.

FME 2023: A Preview

My, where does the time go? It seems not that long ago when I was basking in the glow of FME 2022, hungover from the thrill of a festival in such a far off remote part of the province, having the opportunity to see acts like Gustaf and Gus Englehorn for the first time. But that is what FME, or Festival de musique émergente is all about: Being exposed to music, often new, experimental and never boring. The 2023 edition is set to get underway over the labour day weekend in Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec.

Shazam Fest 2023

In the Eastern townships of Quebec, just outside of Ayer’s Cliff, Shazam Fest took place over the July 13-16th weekend. Thursday through Sunday, and I had the opportunity to check out Friday’s lineup. Since its humble beginnings eighteen years ago the festival of circus and music has grown up to become one of Quebec’s best kept secrets. Held on one of the most idyllic festival sites around, with a hidden valley that leads to a natural amphitheater and the Shazam village which hosts the festival’s stages and vendors.

Pink Floyd Exhibition Debuts in Montreal

The Pink Floyd “Their Mortal Remains” exhibition opened in Montreal on Nov. 4 at Arsenal Contemporary Art. The exhibit includes hundreds of artifacts from the legendary rock band’s lengthy history, covering Pink Floyd’s legacy from their 1967 debut The Piper at the Gates of Dawn to 2014’s The Endless River.

Dime's 2022 Glory Challenge

Montreal streetwear and skate brand, Dime brought their Glory Challenge back for its sixth edition last Saturday. Despite a two year gap due to the COVID-19 pandemic, their audience has continued to grow. Brand new challenges were being presented, and there was no shortage of skaters eager to conquer them. However, the goal isn't fame or fortune. “Getting together and having a community, that’s why I’m here,” said Leon Dechapdelaine, a skater hailing from Quebec, who was invited to the event.

What to expect at This Year's 20th Edition Festival Musique Emergence

The 20th edition of Festival Musique Emergence (FME) is about to take off over the Labour Day weekend of 2022. For four days the northern Quebec city of Rouyn-Noranda in the Abitibi-Témiscamingue region of Quebec becomes a hub of all things cool.

August in Blue: The Blues in Maggie Nelson’s Bluets

While August in Blue seeks to celebrate the Afro-American contribution of blues music, the genre week that today comes to its close, also encourages us to reflect on the overall role the blues plays in our lives even when we’re not listening to the blues. To have the blues, is in part, to experience the blues music.

Osheaga 2022 CJLO Top Picks – Nostalgic for the Moment

Osheaga is finally back with its first full-scale edition (taking place at Parc Jean-Drapeau from July 29th – July 31st) since the beginning of the pandemic. Headlined by Arcade Fire, Dua Lipa, and Future, the festival is also celebrating its 15th anniversary this year.

If that wasn’t already exciting enough, CJLO also has a pair of tickets up for grabs – head to our Instagram page to enter the giveaway!

In the meantime, here are the 2022 lineup top picks from the CJLO magazine team.

The Shazam Festival 2022

The Shazam Festival took place over the weekend of July 9, where the hills of the eastern townships were alive with the sound of music and mayhem. Free from Covid restrictions for the first time in years, the festival was able to go ahead at full capacity.

Montreal Fringe: A Murder Mystery and a Raunchy Bonhomme Carnaval

An Awkward Apologetic Evening with Leighland Beckman

I was at the Petit Campus once again to spend an evening with Leighland Beckman. The Fringe description for his show promised the audience a guitarist, dirty songs, profuse apologies and a happy ending.

Montreal Fringe: What About Albert?, A Mini Essay

Not everyone is lucky enough of having a workplace that’s at least a smidgen enjoyable, as evidenced in The Malicious Basement Theatre Company’s What About Albert?, written by Xander Chung. The plot follows a day in the shift of two part-time workers, a grill sergeant named Pod (Jordan Prentice) and fry cook named Pick (Fanny Dvorkin), in the hell-scape of the fast food chain they work at.
